  DODDA MARADA NERALINALI
(A Creativity Work Shop)

A Creativity Work Shop `Dodda Marada Neralinali’ is being organized by Janapada Seva Trust for rural children from last 10 years. It is conducted during the month of May every year. The rural children of lower income group in the age group of 8 and 15 participate in the workshop. The workshop is of duration of twenty days and about 50-60 children participate.

CONTEXT

The children playing under the thick shadow and cool breeze of the big trees like banyan, tamarind in the scorching heat of Indian summer is a common seen of rural India. The children will be on their own, out of the clutches of their parents and teachers and at the peak of their creative capacities under the shadow of the trees. They sing, they swing, they play, and they tell stories what not? They will be deeply absorbed in the world of imagination and creation. Thanks to the mass media like television. The rural children are also slowly getting glued to cinemas and soaps of the idiot box. The scene of children under the tree in summer is gradually diminishing. You rarely hear the songs and giggling of the children any more. The creative children are becoming passive in front of the television. To bring back the children to the shade of the tree from the television and make them enjoy their childhood with other children and have lot of fun in nature the Trust is holding this creativity work shop for children.

Inspired by the creative children under the tree, the programmed is named as DODDA MARADA NERALINALI (`under the shadow of the big tree’, literally.) In memory of the happy children under the tree who motivated us to hold such activity.

In last 10 years more than 500 children have participated in this work shop of 20 days. Singing, playing, dancing, clay work, painting, theater activity, trekking, are some of the activities of the work shop. Well known Theater personalities, artists from Mysore and Bangalore guide the workshop. On the final day, in a public function the children exhibit all the skills they acquired in the camp. More than 500 people witness the programme every year.
